As a leading European innovation organisation focusing on digital technologies applied to Urban Life & Mobility in particular, EIT Digital joined the Smart City Expo in Barcelona on 17-19 November 2015, with a stand and a side track meeting in the hotel Porta Fira. 

The smart city summit 2015 in Barcelona, Smart City Expo World Congress, held its best edition so far, from November 17/19-2015. This year’s event brought together some 500 cities from the 5 continents, 465 exhibitors and over 400 speakers and 14,000 attendees. The huge number of attendees guaranteed a positive chance to meet potential buyers for the innovations that activities and startups of the Urban Life & Mobility Action Line. More specifically, it was an excellent opportunity to meet in one-place key players, stakeholders and decision makers in the Smart City industry. It showed out that this was really the place to be in Europa about smart cities.

EIT Digital’s booth of Urban Life & Mobility in the spotlight of Smart City Expo

EIT Digital’s Action Line Urban Life & Mobility lined up with 6 innovation activities and 7 startups with a stand at the exhibition floor. Gilles Betis, Urban Life & Mobility Action Line Leader, says: “We attracted a lot of attention at our booth. Many people asked for information about EIT Digital and the innovations we offer in Urban Life & Mobility. Next to this we may say that our startups and innovation activities are satisfied with the good contacts during the exhibition and during the Side Event that we have organised as a side track of the exhibition. All the seats were taken and with more than 75 persons, the room was fully packed!”

>> Fit to Perform is a wearable solution for drivers that records biological and physiological data, with the aim of improving their health and driving performance. 
>> Ice Gateway optimizes outdoor lighting and adds many services for people passing by street lights in smart cities. 
>> Infozone is a platform for mobile marketing that helps businesses reach, engage and attract the right customers at the right spot and in the right time. 
>> Localidata develops information technology services focused on open data for cities.
>> Local Motors 
uses 3-D printing technology to makes cars. They combine co-creation and micro-manufacturing to bring hardware innovations to market. 
>> PlugSurfing is an application and billing system that empower electric car drivers to find and use charging points wherever they are and whenever they want. 
>> ProtoWorld is an interactive simulation tool that allows mobility stakeholders to collaborate in envisioning new mobility strategies and experimenting with different scenarios in a realistic 3d-simulation environment.
>> Carzapp offers complete smart access solutions for car sharing, logistics and smart home applications. The patented hardware «ZappKit» allows keyless access via smartphone app. 
>> Vulog is a flexible and modular software platform that allows mobility operators to implement all types of car sharing services, covering round trip, one way and free floating car sharing systems in all vehicle types.

Special Side Event

As already said, EIT Digital organised a special side event on Wednesday November 18. For this occasion, Francis Pisani, an international expert on urban life, gave an inspiring keynote, highlighting how different cities in the world become smarter. Thereafter, 5 minute pitches of 10 innovation activities took the stage. The networking part afterwards brought the international and targeted audience, from European and international cities, closer to the Action Line and the activities of Urban Life and Mobility. Needless to say that this side event was very successful and delivered focused attention to be followed up in the coming months; turning leads into prospects.
