The Spanish Government has decided to locate a new, Internet first-level backbone node at the EIT ICT Labs Collocation Centre in Madrid hosted by IMDEA Software Institute. This is a unique backbone node in the whole Madrid Region that allows for high-capacity fibre-optical network that provides access to the international academic network to universities and research and innovation centres in Spain.

It provides the academic, research and innovation communities in Spain with high-quality communication, collaboration, and experimentation capabilities. The new backbone node is expected to become operational before the end of 2014 and will provide very high speed connectivity, giving ample support to educational, research, innovation, and business development activities and providing an extremely flexible platform for expansion and experimentation.

The IMDEA Software Institute already coordinates the academic and research Internet backbone of the Madrid Region, REDIMadrid, which currently provides high-speed 10 gigabit Internet connections to fifteen universities and research institutes located in the Madrid region.
