The Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs and the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science, together with Agentschap NL organised a conference to raise awareness of the EIT and its KICs on 4 June, 2013 in the Hague. EIT representatives and the existing KICs presented first-hand on how the concept works in practice and what future activities are planned. The EIT Awareness day was visited by more than 200 participants.       

Among the speakers were Alexander von Gabain, Chairman of the EIT Governing Board, and Willem Jonker, CEO of EIT ICT Labs. Alexander von Gabain mentioned that EIT helps students to create their own jobs. Willem Jonker underlined this statement with his presentation on the EIT ICT Lab’s state of affairs. He presented EIT ICT Labs as an operational KIC that innovates in societal areas of strategic importance such as Smart Energy Systems and Health and Wellbeing, and that also educates entrepreneurial talent through the EIT ICT Labs Master and Doctoral Schools. 

The speakers gave a good insight on the objective of EIT to strengthening Europe's innovation capacity through the three already existing Knowledge and Innovation Communities. Integrating the knowledge triangle of research, higher education and innovation allows for new forms of cooperation and synergies.

EIT intends to launch a call for proposals to create new KICs as part of the Horizon 2020 program
