Smart Energy Systems is one of the key topics of the EIT ICT Labs Idea Challenge – a EU wide innovation contest for early stage startups and innovators. The Smart Energy Startup Booster gives startups in the field of Smart Energy the opportunity to find out more about the contest that provides all necessary resources to start or boost a business. On top of it, the event deals with the sensitive topic of patenting for smart grids. Companies need to be able to protect their inventions against their competitors to secure a return on their investment and the patent system is there to offer this protection. The interactions between the patent and standards development systems is also crucial, as standards are essential for interoperability, and it is essential to enable the inclusion of the latest patented technologies in standards. Therefore we have invited Giulio Ceccarini, patent examiner and technical expert in smart grids from the European Patent Office, to provide hands-on advice.
