Karos application mixes car-pooling and public transport in Ile-de-France region. Here car-pooling and Paris regional train (RER).

Starting July 2016, the smart car-pooling application Karos, supported by the EIT Digital Accelerator, turns multimodal in the Paris region by connecting to STIF (Syndicat des Transports d’Ile-de-France) rail network.

Karos leverages machine learning and big data technologies to transform cars empty seats into brand new transport networks.

By integrating a predictive multimodal routes algorithm to its application, Karos offers the possibility to combine car-pooling and traditional public transport. The application embeds the public transport plans of Ile-de-France to offer trips combining car-pooling, subway, tram and Paris regional trains. Soon extended to the whole French territory, this new feature now enables users to access fastest routes to get to their destination.

Thanks to the multimodality, Karos solves the main problem of daily commuting: The first and last kilometres make the majority of French commuters give up public transport to go to work. 67% of the journeys made through the Karos network have as origin or destination a place located at more than 10 minutes walk from a train station.

“Karos mission is to transform private cars into public transport. It was therefore logical to integrate our car-pooling network in the overall mobility chain and thus experiment new territorial policies to increase new modes of sustainable transport” says Olivier Binet, CEO and Co-founder of Karos.

Karos won the first prize of EIT Digital Challenge in the Urban Life and Mobility category in 2015. EIT Digital showcased Karos at events such as Innovative City and Viva Technology to increase its visibility among potential new customers.
