SME4DD: A comprehensive digital transformation journey for European businesses
At its core, the SME4DD initiative is about equipping businesses with the tools they need…
EIT Digital has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with PNICube, the Italian network of universities and academic incubators. This agreement marks a significant step in EIT Digital's mission to accelerate Europe's digital transformation by fostering academic talent and empowering globally competitive deep-tech startups.
Through this collaboration, EIT Digital will enhance the impact of Italy’s leading innovation competitions, including the Premio Nazionale Innovazione and the Italian Master Startup Award. EIT Digital will actively participate as a judge and offer targeted prizes, including access to advanced training, workshops on intellectual property and storytelling, and inclusion in EIT Digital’s Open Innovation Factory, a platform tailored to scale promising deep-tech startups.
PNICube, established in 2004, is a vital player in Italy’s innovation ecosystem. Over its two decades of activity, PNICube has supported the development of more than 1,100 innovative startup projects. It represents over 80% of the country’s public universities and has been instrumental in promoting academic entrepreneurship. This deep connection to Italian research institutions makes PNICube an ideal partner for EIT Digital, which is dedicated to advancing Europe’s position as a leader in the global digital economy.
“This agreement with PNICube demonstrates our commitment to building a strong and sustainable digital Europe," said Federico Menna, CEO of EIT Digital. "By partnering with such an established network in Italy, we not only strengthen our pan-European ecosystem but also provide essential tools to researchers and entrepreneurs to turn their ideas into market-ready innovations."
The partnership will also build on the strength of EIT Digital’s SPIN programmes - SPIN Explore and SPIN Rise - which are specifically designed to address the lab-to-market gap that hinders many research-based innovations in Europe. These programmes aim to equip researchers with entrepreneurial tools and provide a structured pathway to commercializing groundbreaking ideas.
SPIN Explore is a five-week online course covering the essentials of entrepreneurship, from intellectual property management to crafting compelling narratives for non-scientific audiences. Running from October to November 2024, this programme targets researchers at any stage of their career who are interested in understanding the commercialization potential of their work. Meanwhile, SPIN Rise offers a more intensive three-month hybrid programme, combining advanced training with access to EIT Digital’s extensive network of industry experts, venture builders, and IP specialists.
Through initiatives like SPIN, EIT Digital is bridging the gap between academic research and industry needs, creating a pipeline of deep-tech startups poised for success in global markets. The SPIN programmes complement the goals of PNICube’s competitions by equipping winners with the tools to scale their innovations effectively.
The Memorandum of Understanding reflects a shared vision: positioning Europe as a global leader in technology while creating an inclusive and competitive future.
"This partnership exemplifies what can be achieved when academia and industry come together with a shared goal," said Menna. "We’re not just supporting startups; we’re building an ecosystem where talent, ideas, and resources converge to create long-term value for Europe."
