Title: SEVERE WEATHER EVENTS AND SOCIAL MEDIA STREAMS: BIGDATA APPROACH FOR IMPACT MAPPING

Abstract: Recently large amount of social information are publicly available thanks to "social media streams". These ones are a mass of contents generated by users flowing in SM platform, as Twitter, and are a most interesting source to analyze impacts of events regarding society. Social media (SM) technologies provide tools to parse this contents and indirectly they give a chance to perform a semantic filtering by using specific tags recognizable as simple specific terms or word marker named hashtags prefixed with a "#" character. The aim of work is to build an effective methodology to recognize any potential association between severe weather events and SM streams using opportune semantic tag filters.
Alfonso Crisci is a bio-meteorologist and data scientist at IBIMET CNR ( Italian National Research Council). Born in Italy at Pescara in 1969 having double nationality : Italian and French. Degree in Agriculture Science in 1995. Actually working on climatic parameter related to human thermal comfort and health risk related to weather physical parameter or given by them indirectly (environmental epidemiology of diseases done by vectors i.e. Aedes Albopitus -Tiger Mosquito for arbovirus ). He have worked on the climatic change issues in regard to detection of the evolution in extreme event occurrence trough using various time series analysis frameworks . Also he is specialized in geo-statistical modelling on large sample of geo referred data ( for health and weather) in order to evaluate the parametric responses during climatic event's impacts for individuals and at aggregate scale for human population. Recently he's going to explore the reliability of information sources as the semantically filtered social media contents streams coming from public social media platform concerning to the evaluation of novel geo-proxies, useful to improve response in disaster management or weather risk mapping.
Valentina Grasso: After a degree in Science communication with full marks, she started working within the Institute of Biometeorology of Italian National Research Council on the topics of science communication and perception of climate change, weather related risks and sustainable development. She works as practitioner on science festival and events, public engagement in science, communication campaign on environmental topics (RACES EU project) including editorial activities and web content management. She also works on outreach activities for school, design of educational tools, based on rich internet application and visual geography (ClimateScope tool). In the last two years she collaborated with the Tuscany regional weather service, Consorzio LaMMA, helping with the institutional communication and the web site management and social media strategy. Her research also covers the communication of uncertainty in weather forecast and the public perception of weather bulletins. Within her research interests in the last years emerges the topic of social media and public participation in emergencies. She have a PhD at the University of Florence at Computer Science Department, focused on social media and situational awareness during weather related emergencies. She was one of the authors of the Italian SMEM manifesto.
