Seven business ideas for cyber security and privacy developed during summer school

The EIT Digital summer school on Security and Privacy in Digital Life took place in Trento, from June 26 till July 8. It was organised in collaboration with the University of Trento, partner of EIT Digital, and attended by more than 40 students from 23 different countries.

The summer school had two main objectives: first, increase knowledge of the role that data security and privacy plays in everyday life and, second, explore business opportunities in this area. Students could learn how to transform technical knowledge into innovative business proposals. They also learned how to present a business idea to a potential investor.

Among the lecturers were internationally recognised cryptography experts: Bruce Schneier (US expert in cryptography and computer security), Bart Preneel (inventor and Belgian cryptographer) and Yvo Desmedt (cryptographer and professor at the University of Texas at Dallas). Technical lectures addressed such topic as digital identity, electronic authentication, digital health, electronic commerce, and mobile devices and systems.

At the end of the summer school students presented seven business ideas that were developed during innovation & entrepreneurship courses. Some examples: hardware security token for secure mail, multiple device password manager, privacy-aware digital profiling tool, and smart watch app that uses biometric authentication to unlock digital devices.

Students of the summer school appreciated the international environment (Blanca, Spain), as well as high level of technical lectures and entrepreneurial courses, that were particularly appreciated by students with deep technical knowledge (Marco, Italy), and by those who seek to create their own business in the future (Diana, Romania).

The summer school, that took place in Trento, was one of the EIT Digital summer schools that in 2016 take place in seven different locations in Europe.
