Professor Marko Turpeinen, Director EIT ICT Labs Helsinki, gave a keynote speech at the first ICT4S conference held on Feb 13-14 in Zürich. The conference gathered together world-leading experts in the field of sustainable design and use of Information and Communication Technologies. ICT4S is about utilizing the transformational power of ICT for making our world more sustainable: saving energy and material resources by creating more value from less input of limited natural resources, increasing quality of life for all.

Marko Turpeinen's speech was focused on data-driven resource management. "Decisions on sustainable resource management, both by organizations and for individuals, are often not based on solid facts and numbers. Even when quantitative goals are set, real-time feedback mechanisms do not exist for guiding and evaluating the results", explains Marko.

Marko is a visiting professor in Media Technology at the Royal Institute of Technology KTH, also a partner of EIT ICT Labs. At KTH Centre for Sustainable Communications, our hypothesis is that ICT can allow making environmental variables visible and significantly improve our capacity to make sustainable decisions. Our aim is to explore the application of current technologies such as linked and open data, APIs, real-time data flows, and the creation of novel tools and services needed for an ICT-based, data-driven, sustainability approach.

EIT ICT Labs mission is to drive European leadership in ICT innovation for economic growth and quality of life.
