Dr. Marko Turpeinen, Director for EIT ICT Labs Helsinki, gave a keynote speech at the second ICT4S conference held on August 24-27 in Stockholm. Turpeinen presented activities from all the three knowledge and innovation communities of EIT - EIT ICT Labs, InnoEnergy and ClimateKIC. According to Turpeinen the aim is to produce sustainable innovations in all activities be it energy-efficient networks, raising awareness of climate change or opening up big data to allow for smarter solutions for instance in city environments. He especially stressed the importance of the cooperation of the existing and future KICs.

The ICT4S conferences brought together leading researchers in ICT for sustainability with government and industry representatives, including decision-makers with an interest in using ICT for sustainability, researchers focusing on ICT effects on sustainability and developers of sustainable ICT systems or applications.

The theme of the 2014 conference was “ICT and transformational change”. Sustainable development needs transformational changes both in technology and in our patterns of production and consumption.

Dr. Marko Turpeinen is the Director of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) ICT Labs Helsinki and he is the Principal Scientist at Helsinki Institute for Information Technology (HIIT). He has a Doctor of Technology Degree in Computer Science from Helsinki University of Technology (TKK) and a Master of Science Degree in Media Arts and Sciences from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He held a Professor position in Media Technology at The Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm in 2006-2013. He has also extensive industrial experience from the media industry, as between 1996 and 2005 he worked in various executive positions at Alma Media Corporation, a Finnish media company.
