In the closing remarks of the Future Networking Solutions seminar, action line leader Henrik Abramowicz summed up the presentations, the strategy for the coming year and he underlined how impressed he was with the 2014 year results, providing many ideas that are being transformed into new products and services, standards and sustainable business models for SMEs to bring to the market.
Held in the Electrum building in Kista, the end of year event offered a public dissemination of the 2014 research and innovation projects in the field of Future Networking Solutions (FNS). The main focus areas of FNS are Cellular Access, Software Defined Networks and Internet of Things. Other projects are relating to education, to European test-beds and the liaison with other EU initiatives.
Everything-as-a-service
The Keynote “From Research to Innovation” was delivered by Sandor Albrecht, Director of IP and Transport at Ericsson Research. After passing the magic number 5 billion connected people in 2010 and moving towards the 50 billion connected devices in 2020 he quoted other industrial and thought leaders that we need to educate the next generation to be creative, that innovation has to be faster and that the change in IT has to keep up the speed. Sandor also talked about how innovations can disrupt the market and exemplifying it with the Radio Dot systems developed in Ericsson that is changing the small cell market.
The previous industrial and research focus on enhancing the technical performance of network solutions is shifting more towards optimizing for flexibility. The operators are expecting that Software Defined Networks will enable the development of more flexible networks with e.g. lower operational costs, faster time-to-market for new services and applications, more elastic and scalable services and dynamic service-driven virtual networks capable of supporting everything-as-a-service.
