The official manifestation of the EIT ICT Labs Doctoral School on ICT Innovation that bring together partners in Education, Research and Business, was conducted at Université Pierre et Marie Curie, UPMC, on March 27 2013.

UPMC rector, Professor Jean Chambaz, welcomed the participants - students, supporters, stakeholders and speakers - EIT ICT Labs CEO Willem Jonker, Director of Institut de Formation Doctorale, UPMCJean-Dominique Polack, EIT ICT Labs Education Director Anders Flodström and Head of the EIT ICT Labs Doctoral School on ICT Innovation, Professor Christian Queinnec. 

The overarching goals of the EIT ICT Labs Doctoral School is to foster Innovation and Entrepreneurship (I&E) among master and doctoral students, proving that it can be taught by an injection of I&E into education. The empowering of ICT top talents for the future is an added value provided by the whole Knowledge and Innovation Community of EIT ICT Labs.

A poster of the current partnership of the EIT ICT Labs Doctoral School was signed by CEO Willem Jonker for the inauguration. In addition to the three main core partners Aalto, KTH and UPMC another ten higher education institutes have joined - Abo Akademi, BME, ELTE, Institut Mines-Telecom, Oulu, ParisSud, Rennes1, Trento, UCL, U of Turku.

EIT ICT Labs doctoral students also take part in their local Doctoral Training Centre (DTC); a meeting place where students connects with ICT innovation hotspots and entrepreneurial companies in Europe.  The DTC ensures that a business partner participates in the mentoring of each doctoral student. Furthermore, it contributes to and facilitates the implementation of the education in Innovation and Entrepreneurship and actively support the doctoral students’ driven entrepreneurial efforts.

- Young, bright and business-savvy ICT Doctoral students with a strong head for innovation - that is what companies that get involved in EIT ICT Labs Doctoral School can expect. The aim is to make the young doctors commercially aware research leaders, ready to take on new challenges in the forefront of European ICT industry, says CEO Willem Jonker.

In conjunction with the inauguration of the Doctoral School the Doctoral Training Centre of Paris was launched in the premises of the Lincs laboratory in the same building as the EIT ICT Labs Co-location Centre Paris. Five DTC’s are already established – in Budapest, Helsinki, Paris, Rennes and Trento. Preparations to set up Doctoral Training Centres are ongoing in Eindhoven and Stockholm.

- We welcome supervisors from the industry, to actively participate in the coaching of the doctoral students, building a bridge between research and industry. We expect key people from the industry to take active part in the advisory boards of the DTCs, to offer advice on the content of the program, and decide which topics should be dealt with, says Christian Queinnec, head of EIT ICT Labs Doctoral School.
