BeCamGreen's tool will redefine the way traffic controllers understand mobility patterns, and help establish new policies that promote public transportation, car sharing, and high occupancy vehicles. It will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and implement discounts, penalties and access restrictions on vehicles depending on their occupancy.

Digital Cities' Action Line Innovation Activity that is creating a tool that  identifies the kind of vehicle and its number of passengers in a real-time, automatic and precise way.

 

This solution will redefine the way traffic controllers understand mobility patterns, and help establish new policies that promote public transportation, car sharing, and high occupancy vehicles. It will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and implement discounts, penalties and access restrictions on vehicles depending on their occupancy. The technology is based in the macro analysis of data, the latest artificial vision mechanisms and a combination of deep learning and multispectral analysis.

 

Today, the implementation of these types of traffic reduction measures depends on surveillance, dissuasive controls, and infraction detection by the authorities, something costly, complex and mostly ineffective. BeCamGreen intends to finalise the development of a commercial product that will be reliable, automatic and delivered  at a reasonable cost to respond to increasing demand, such as that coming from the new requirement for American highway tenders.

 

The team leading the development of BeCamGreen is working on the evolution of already existing image processing algorithms for human and facial detection. To achieve the highest precision, the best video surveillance equipment is to be brought in and multispectral analysis is being integrated to be able to detect human skin and avoid the usage of dolls and other simulations that used to trick vehicle occupancy sensors.

 

The team is also working in a big data engine capable of detecting and predicting traffic status using the tremendous volume of information coming from IoT sensors, social media, open data and its very own vision subsystem and integrating them in real time. This engine will facilitate valuable information that will enable policy makers and public administrations to make decisions and define strategies concerning urban and road mobility.

 

Stéphane Péan, Digital Cities Action Line Leader, asserted: "We are looking at a really interesting technology but, most of all, to a very business oriented solution that is going to have a great international impact on roads and city streets, both in Europe and the USA."

 

Leyre Merle, Innovation Activity Leader said: "Our objective is not to penalise single-occupancy car drivers, but to reward those that make more sustainable transport choices, for example by applying reduced toll fares or providing priority lanes to high-occupancy vehicles. We target at promoting a shift of mind among citizens, encouraging them to think twice before getting into their cars, and choose the travel option that benefits both the citizen and the whole city."

BeCamGreen is one of the 11 Innovation Activities of the 

 

Digital Cities Action Line for 2017. This Action Line leverages the digital transformation of the cities through centralised, participative and collaborative interactions between city actors: government, city service providers, industry, and citizens. This transformation enables the deployment of disruptive information, mobility and safety services in the cities.
