EIT Digital develops entertainment solution to improve driver safety

EIT Digital has launched a new Innovation Activity - MEMoSa (in car Media Entertainment Mobility and Safety): a combination of wearable technology and a mobile cloud-based platform that tracks drivers’ physiological and psychological conditions on the road, providing added value services to both driver and passengers. The solution should improve road safety and reduce overall insurance costs.

Carmen Criminisi, Activity Lead of MEMoSa from TIM explains:

"The rationale for MEMoSa is that road safety has become a major societal topic and issue. In 2011, over 30,000 people died on E.U. roads. 20% of all accidents are related to preventable factors such as drowsiness or fatigue. With MEMoSa, cars will become innovative digital platforms that will improve the safety of car owners while driving. It will reduce the risk factors of car accidents thanks to the collection of data, both personal (trough a wearable device) and from the car (trough an On-Board Diagnostic unit), providing recommendations to users to avoid dangerous situations. It will also be proposed as an insurance package monitoring the driver’s safety while providing additional entertainment and location-based services to all the passengers of the vehicle."

MEMoSa is a mobile and cloud service platform destined mainly for insurance companies aimed at:

  • Reducing insurance costs through advanced profiling capabilities of their end-users to determine the risks factors based on dynamic data (personal and from the vehicle)
  • Offering added-value, personalised insurance packages and services based on contextual information

How will MEMoSa work?

MEMoSa

Italy will be the first target in Europe.

The Partners working on the development of MEMoSa and their roles are as follows:

  • Two insurance companies as early customers of the MEMoSa solution: BNP Paribas Cardif to validate the service propositions with end-users and Generalicar as research and testing centre owned by Generali Group
  • TIM: product owner and business champion
  • Philips as expert in sleep and vigilance cloud algorithms
  • Politecnico di Milano: as SW and mobile expert, lead development of in-car mobile app
  • Fondazione Bruno Kessler: data collection and post-processing activities, validation of the system
  • eXrade: location-based and contextualised services

The Digital Wellbeing Action Line leverages digital technologies to stay healthy (prevention and early detection) or cope with an existing chronic condition. Both physical and mental wellbeing are considered. The solutions generally rely on enabling consumers to be well informed about their wellbeing and to be able to use digital instrumentation to monitor and improve their quality of life, according to the motto "an ounce of prevention is worth at least a pound of cure."
