IoTHack Challenge

What is this about?

Unlike regular hackathons, this is a 2-step challenge to see how far would you go to develop your idea in a totally new IoT environment. You will have the opportunity to use a new IoT platform (ACTIVE), developed as part of the EIT Digital High Impact Initiative.

In the first part of the challenge that will span over a weekend, you along with your team, will learn about the platform and then come up with an idea you want to work on based on the themes of the challenge. At the end of the weekend you will present your idea / project proposal in terms of feasibility, practicality and viability and how it fits to the theme.

Themes

The focus for this event would be on Sustainable Cities.

Under this umbrella theme, we have identified the following sub-catagories:

  • Smart Energy
  • Smart Healthcare and Well-being
  • Smart Transportation and Infrastructure
  • Smart Consumer Electronics

Your idea should be based around these themes.

During the Stage 1 of the challenge you will have the opportunity to learn about the new ACTIVE IoT platform and you can shape your idea accordingly.

In addition to the platform, you can use any other open data/ open software as you require. If you are using proprietary software, make sure that you are legally allowed to use it for your project.


A jury decides the best ideas and then selected teams get a chance to proceed to the next stage where they work hands-on using the ACTIVE IoT Platform over a period of 1.5 months with guidance from experienced mentors, at the end of which the jury decides a winner.

Jury criteria

The aim of this challenge is not just to build an application or a product but also for the teams to learn about the new ACTIVE IoT platform. Hence teams will be judged based on their understanding of the platform, originality of the idea, future applicability of their idea, how well and how extensively you use the platform, your feedback on the platform based on your usage, and of course, on your final presentations/demos.

Please note that if you are planning to enroll in the course II2300 Product Realisation Processes at KTH Kista by Prof. Mark Smith, you may also be able to get ECTS for the project you work on during the challenge, as part of the course. Contact us or Prof. Mark Smith for more details.


What's at stake here?

The reward for stage 1 is obviously, the opportunity to take your idea forward to the next stage, where your team will be provided with mentorship and resources required to work on your idea.

Prizes

The Grand prize for the final round :

  • 1st prize - 7000 SEK (approx EUR 700)
  • 2nd prize - 4000 SEK (approx EUR 400)
  • 3rd prize - 2000 SEK (approx EUR 200)

Also maybe the chance to continue working on your idea at EIT Digital - High Impact Initiative.

All participants get certificates for participation of course.

FAQ

Q1. I don’t have a team yet, can I register alone ?

A. Yes of course. you will have the opportunity to meet other participants on 13th October and find other like minded people to build a team.

Q2. Do I have to be a student to register ?

A. Absolutely not ! you could be a student, working professional, a professor, a startup, or a CEO. As long as you are enthusiastic and curious you are most welcome !

Q3. i have an early stage startup, can I join the event to check out the platform ?

A. Of course ! You can also get in touch with us personally, if you have some specific questions about the platform itself.

Q4. I don’t want to participate in the competition but would like to try the platform anyway. Can I do that somehow ?

A. Yes Absolutely. Get in touch with us personally and we can help you with the process.

Q5. Can I use this project to get ECTS ?

A. Yes ! If you register yourself for the course “II2300 Product Realisation Processes” at KTH Kista by Prof. Mark Smith, you can work on the project as part of the coursework and get ECTS for it.

Q6. Will there be any food during the event ?

A. Yes there will be food for everyone who registers !

Q7. I registered and attended the 1st day presentations, but could not continue through the weekend. Can I still get a certificate of participation ?

A. Unfortunately no, the certificate of participation will be given, only to participants who have worked through the entire weekend and been a part of the presentations on 15th October. If there are special circumstances because of which you cannot attend, you need to inform us beforehand.

Q8. My team won stage 1, but we cant continue further. What do we do ?

A. We hope it doesn’t come to that. But if it does, your idea will be presented as an open project proposal to students taking the course “II2300 Product Realisation Processes” at KTH Kista. You will of course be given due credit for it. 

Q9. Will there be mentors to help me or I am on my own ?

A. Yes there will be ACTIVE project members and KTH professors to guide you during the entire event.

Q10. Who owns the idea we come up with ?

A. The idea / application that you build on top of the ACTIVE platform will be owned by EIT Digital as part of the HII Active. You will, of course, always be given due credit for your work.
However, if you are a startup/company that wants to join the event, contact us personally to discuss this.

Q11. Can we use other tools besides the ACTIVE platform?

A. Yes of course. You will be judged on how well you use and explore the platform, and additionally if you need to use any other tools/software/hardware, you are most welcome to do so. just make sure you are legally allowed to use those components.

Q12. What is the schedule for the Stage 2 of the event. 

A. The stage 2 will officially be conducted from Oct 17 - 30 November 2017. The first week of December you will have time to fine tune your presentations and short reports. On December 7th we will have the final presentations of your work during the EIT Digital Stockholm Innovation Day. A more detailed schedule will be posted later.

Q13. Can we continue working on our idea even after the event is over ?

A. Yes, if the jury really likes your idea and finds the team sufficiently motivated, there may be a possibility to continue working on your idea even after the event finals are over.
