Study Abroad Internships

These internships are done as a part of your study abroad curriculum. They are part-time and unpaid. You will need to register with your university for the study abroad programme in the city (or within a commutable distance to) where your internship is located. You will also need to make arrangements with your university to get academic credit for the internship.

Before applying for any of these internship positions, it is recommended that you first check with your university study abroad office to identify the appropriate study abroad programme and to confirm whether you will be able to get academic credit for the internship.

While you are responsible for organizing your own travel, housing, visa, financial aid, and medical coverage, your university study abroad office will often assist you with many of these logistics.

Applied Innovation Intern at BT in UK

BT has an innovation function made up of a number of component capabilities including scouting, prototyping, trials, proposition building, business case writing and showcases. This has been very successful in BT for a number of years, and it evolves with time. This project would be to benchmark our innovation functions against other corporates of a similar size, calling out best practice, and identifying gaps in the capabilities that BT has with suggested additional functions.

Data Science Intern at BT in UK

Data Science best practice exchange and sharing.

Have you worked on / undertaken some courses on Machine Learning and Data Science? Would you be able to play back your knowledge and perspective to a team of Data Scientists working at a Telco? We’re interested in trying to learn from other people how better to organize and develop our data science practice, so we’d be keen to host you to:

  1. Research and report on your ideas about how data science should work in a team.
  2. Host and facilitate a Data Science teach in which engages the team in sharing ideas and approaches.
  3. Investigate and undertake the set-up of an internal publication infrastructure.
  4. Review and report on the outcome of the teach-in and provide feedback for future action.

We will use this information to frame and inform wider research in to this area.

Security Research Intern at BT in UK

Deep learning for Cyber defence: This project is focussed on application of latest deep learning techniques for identification of anomalies in network data. The internship require demonstration of how open source tools can be used to learn normal network behaviour and then highlight deviations from normal behaviour using visualisation techniques.

Blockchain Use case development: In this project we aim to develop a simple Blockchain implementation to demonstrate the benefits and shortcomings of Blockchain technology. The internship will make recommendations about where Blockchain technology adds value to a corporate application domain and how to overcome the current limitations of the technology.

Malware propagation modelling and prediction: The project is focused on using modelling and simulation techniques to understand how modern malware propagates within IT networks. The project will develop a model and a simulation environment for demonstrating the outbreak of malware in a corporate network.

Social Physics Intern at BT in UK

Technology use is changing at a stunning rate as massive social and economic effects are sweeping through people’s daily lives, and the structures and systems that underpin our economies and communities. We are interested in studying this process from a plethora of perspectives. In other work in the past we have looked at how technology change is perceived in different locations – USA, China and UK. We would like to refresh and generate new perspectives on the impact of technology on individuals and we would like the intern(s) who work on this project to catalogue the technologies that they encounter and use and to keep and share (with us for use in a wider research project) a diary of the use that they make of them. We would like them to participate in a series of interviews that investigate their feelings about the value, difficulties and positive and negative effects of the tools and technical processes that they encounter. Finally we would like the intern to report on their reflections about the impact of technology on their life in the period of the internship.

We will use this information to frame and inform wider research in to this area.
