Sophia Antipolis

Sophia Antipolis

Sophia Antipolis is the first technology park created in France, in 1969. It has a critical mass of entities, an outstanding international reputation, an ecosystem of public/private cross-fertilisation, and a strong degree of attractiveness. It has to be emphasized too that the ICT sector in France concentrates the second highest number of its jobs in this South-East part of the country (77 000 ICT jobs at large, including related activities - source MDER Panorama ICT 2013) after Ile-de-France.

The entire ecosystem is committed to a comprehensive innovation model achieving balance and integration among education, innovation, and research activities, in line with EIT Digital objectives.

On June 2015, Sophia Antipolis in a joint effort with Nice, Cannes and Grasse was labelled "french tech CÔTE D’AZUR". Through its Sophia Antipolis satellite, EIT Digital actively participated into the French Tech application process.

The Sophia Antipolis EIT Digital satellite was inaugurated in May 2014. It offers ideal spaces for formal and informal meetings between students, university professors, researchers, business and industrial tenants in the digital domain.

The EIT Digital partners in Sophia Antipolis to date are: University of Nice Sophia Antipolis, INRIA, EURECOM, Orange and the Secured and Communicating Solutions cluster, SCS also present in Aix-en-Provence.

  • As far as Education is concerned, the Sophia Antipolis EIT Digital satellite hosts 2 Masters: the 1st and 2nd year of the Master in Data Science and the 2nd year of the Master in Internet Technology and Architecture. Both are run by the University of Nice Sophia Antipolis and provide a Minor in Innovation & Entrepreneurship. In July 2014, together with Eurecom, Inria and the University of Nice Sophia Antipolis, the satellite organised the Urban Life & Mobility summer school (see video HERE). As part of the Doctoral School programme, a Doctoral Training Center (DTC) will soon open in collaboration with the excellence laboratory (aka Labex) UCN@Sophia.
  • Regarding innovation activities, EURECOM develops a semantic knowledge base in 3cixty Innovation Activity and is a key contributor into the Urban Life & Mobility Action Line. 3cixty provides a platform of services to enable people to instantaneously access rich and combined information about a city as it had never been possible before. Inria is also the leader of the Brick and Mortar Cookies, a Smart Spaces innovation activity aimed at improving consumer shopping experience by making it more efficient and comfortable.
  • The Sophia Antipolis satellite also plays an important role in the EIT Digital Accelerator hosting Access to Finance activity so as to help start-ups meet the most appropriate venture capitalists selected among EIT Digital European network. In November 2014, the Instant System start-up from Nice won the 3rd prize of the Urban Life & Mobility part of the European Idea Challenge contest (see video HERE).

The satellite is hosted by the University of Nice Sophia Antipolis, in the heart of the scientific and industrial park. It is located in the Forum building of the SophiaTech Campus.
