Blending the physical world and the virtual world
Smart Spaces create comfortable experiences for users and efficient resource optimization solutions for businesses by applying advanced digital solutions to everyday working and living environments. The big opportunity of using the data collected from the physical environments is still largely untapped. There are numerous opportunities in various operations to better understand and serve users, customers or workers.
Smart Spaces solutions help industries like retail and mobile operators or internet service providers better serve their customers. Other businesses benefitting from smart space solutions include e.g. mobile and out-of-home advertising and info services, lighting, digital signage, and building and office automation. The added intelligence and enabled new services increase competiveness of several industries.
What are we working on?
The focal areas are smart retail, smart buildings and smart urban experiences.
In smart retail, this is specially about creating blended in-store and online solutions and experience to consumers in an omni-channel environment.
For smart buildings, the needs relate to supporting productive working, learning and collaboration environment, and the use of office space and optimization of resources and facilities.
Smart Urban Experiences include information delivery solutions for citizens, event participants and local businesses with users’ own devices or public interactive screens.
Collaboration of Education, Research, Business
Achieving the overall goals of the action line requires close collaboration in the knowledge triangle of Education, Research and Business. It is essential to collaborate and to involve industries providing service and solutions to the focal areas providers in this knowledge triangle of cooperation.
One of the activities where close collaboration and cross-overs in the knowledge triangle take place, are the High Impact Initiatives and the summer schools.
The activities will involve and deploy EIT Digital education, research and business collaboration as much as possible. This relates to the exploration of opportunities like innovation radars patent- and standard boosters, business development and inclusion and scaling up of local initiatives into the EIT Digital ecosystems.

Brick and Mortar Cookies
The activity develops a heterogeneous retail Business Intelligence (BI) solution allowing relevant & precise analysis of customers' behaviours and purchases in brick and mortar stores. In-store customers’ behaviour information is the key to grow retailers’ omni-channel sales strategies by allowing physical stores to deliver as much customers' information as internet cookies. This highly reinforces the need for brick & mortar stores and their teams. The solution combines camera-based infrastructure for Security & BI, wireless-based system for BI, and a connection to POS (Point Of Sales) to calculate sales conversion rate.
