Both decentralized ICT infrastructures as well as user-centric services for Smart Energy Systems are the important focus areas of our action line.
In all Smart Energy Systems activities, we aim to involve smart users to make life easier and come up with technologies for optimizing energy efficiency. Furthermore, we aim to deploy ICT technologies in the energy domain enabling the future smart energy infrastructures and to accelerate implementation of results in daily life.
Smart Energy Systems focuses on ICT as the key enabler for Smart Grid innovation and mobilizes a strong network of European partners from industry and academia to innovate on user involvement, business models and ICT enabled technical infrastructures.
The Smart Energy Systems Business Community is a market place that promotes the EIT Digital’s Innovation activities and coached start-ups to potential buyers of innovation. The Smart Energy System Business Community represents a selected match of startups that are coached by the EIT Digital Business Development Accelerator next to the activities of the Smart Energy System Innovation Action Line.
Innovation Activities 2016
Smart Energy Systems contributes to the creation of an open European energy market by testing and deploying ICT solutions for decentralised power generation infrastructures and user-centric services for smart energy systems. In 2016 the two priority areas are: 1) ICT for decentralized and aggregated power generation infrastructure, with four activities; 2) user-centric services for smart energy eystems with one activity.
EVA service company (Electric Vehicle Aggregator)
Establishment of a service company offering power flexibility provided by the aggregation of electric vehicles to energy retailers and distribution grid operators.
Energy companies with a high share of renewable generation spend a lot of money on the spot market to cover unplanned renewable generation. They can avoid spending this money by having bilateral contracts with aggregators such as the proposed EVA, who can provide the required flexibility to avoid trading on the spot market.
The aggregation service uses a mechanism to steer the consumption behaviour of electric vehicles. The created spin-off company will offer this service to its customers - energy retailers at first, later on distribution system operators as well - helping to solve the problems arising from unpredictable renewable generation.
The spin-off company will be launched in 2016, providing a consultancy service with a toolset for the analysis of risk reduction for the customers. In 2017, the actual aggregation service will be launched for which the prototype will be developed in 2016.

The IntelliSec activity develops technology for protecting electric power grids from existing and future cyber threats by combining and analysing multiple sources of security-relevant information in real-time.
Over 60% of cyber-attacks against critical infrastructures are targeted at the power grid. To protect their assets, grid operators are investing in various security monitoring solutions that create a large amount of monitoring data, but interpreting the data is a daunting task and is resource intensive. Even worse, as attacks become more sophisticated, they are often not identifiable using a single source of security information, but need information from several sources, possibly across institutional boundaries, in order to be identified. The IntelliSec activity develops an integrated data analytics platform that reliably, fast and efficiently identifies advanced persistent threats. Unlike traditional SIEM systems based on batch processing, the IntelliSec platform uses stream processing and is able to process heterogeneous data from private and public security information sources, including host and network IDSs, honeypots, and asset management and network access control systems. Real-time event correlation rules can be customized using a GUI. First trials at customer sites are expected for 2016 and the solution will be brought to market in 2018 by the industrial partners.

MMG-S - Modular Microgrid Services
MMG-S provides software and hardware to design, configure, run and optimize green microgrid energy solutions. Thus environmentally friendly, sustainable, and cost efficient energy supplies independent from the energy grid can be easily tailored, opening new markets for energy consultants and energy providers.
Micro Energy Information System Platform
Conventional electrification approaches do not work in developing countries. Due to higher climate vulnerability in these areas (earthquakes, floods, etc.) centralized infrastructures are inappropriate. Evolutionary stages of electrification are skipped in many markets. What economic significance would it have if everyone could afford a solar home system? What will happen if these are linked to a Smart Grid? In this context in years of research the Micro Energy Usage Controller (MEUC) appliance was developed. MEUC is a smart charge controller for solar home system that can be integrated with existing installations. Due to its innovative features and web-connectivity MEUC will be a game changer in the market of micro finances and along the value creation chain (maintenance, energy trading etc.). The mission of the project is to enable new business models and opening markets for energy saving technologies made in the EU by designing and implementing a cloud-based IT backbone.

The EIT Digital Challenge is the network's contest to reach out, identify and support the best digital start-ups in Europe, that are focused on fast growth of their business in the EU and worldwide.
